On Jumada II 26, 1426 AH, corresponding to August 1, 2005 AD, King Abdullah assumed power and retained the title of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and appointed Sultan bin Abdulaziz as crown prince and Nayef bin Abdul Aziz as his deputy, but Sultan died on Dhul Qi’dah 24, 1432 AH, corresponding to October 22, 2011, and he succeeded him. Nayef bin Abdul Aziz, who continued until his death on Rajab 26 1433 AH corresponding to June 16, 2012, then Salman was appointed crown prince. During the reign of King Abdullah, various sectors developed, most notably the expansion of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, the increase in the number of universities and colleges, the establishment of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, in addition to the program of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques for external scholarships, and the order to establish a number of economic cities. King Abdullah’s rule continued until his death on Rabi’ al-Akhir 3, 1436 AH, corresponding to January 23, 2015, when Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud became king of the country, as Muqrin bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was appointed crown prince. On April 29, 2015, Prince Muhammad bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was appointed as crown prince. He was previously a deputy crown prince since January 23, 2015. On June 21, 2017, Prince Muhammad bin Nayef was relieved of his post and Prince Muhammad bin Salman Al Saud was appointed as crown prince.
